Common Skin Diseases

Eczema

Eczema or dermatitis is inflammation of the skin that can occur anywhere but in atopic eczema often affects the skin creases. It is usually itchy and the skin is often dry.

There are several types of eczema and a number of treatment options.

Dr Blackwell looks after adults and children with all types of eczema and can help accurately diagnose your skin problem and prescribe appropriate treatment.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a common chronic skin problem causing thickened, scaly and sometimes itchy patches of skin, often on the elbows, knees and scalp. It can be treated with creams, ultra violet light and sometimes tablets.

Dr Blackwell will diagnose your psoriasis and arrange suitable treatment (including ultra violet light) that can be provided for you privately at St Albans and Hemel Hempstead hospitals.

Acne

Acne is a very common condition affecting the oil glands on the face chest and back. It can be triggered by hormones in teenagers and the presence of the acne bacteria in the oil glands. It results in blackheads, whiteheads, papules and pustules on the skin.

Dr Blackwell can prescribe a number of treatments for your acne including creams, antibiotics and the vitamin A drug isotretinoin.
