Patch Testing for Skin Allergies

Dermatologists are expert in the diagnosis, investigation and management of skin allergies caused by a patients’ skin coming into contact with a chemical substance to which an individual has become allergic.

Often patients are not aware of this contact so this is investigated by a process called patch testing.

In this investigation a number (approximately 40) of dilute chemicals are applied to the skin of the back.

They are left in place for 48 hours and then removed. A further 48 hours later they are reviewed by the dermatologist and any allergic reactions noted.

This therefore requires 3 visits for the patient over a period of a week.

As this is a very specialised investigation it is undertaken privately by our dermatology specialist nurses at Hemel Hempstead or St Albans hospitals.

If you have any enquiries about this proceedure or others concerning skin allergies please do not hesitate to call and make an initial appointment.
